Fuerteventura is the beach capital of the Canaries and its swathes of powder-soft sand will certainly not disappoint. Sun seekers will find resorts for every taste and budget on their Fuerteventura holidays, whether you're looking for a fun-packed holiday full of adrenalin-pumping activities or a tranquil, relaxing break. Boasting the biggest beaches in the Canaries, it's no surprise that lovers of surfing, windsurfing and water-skiing flock here. Lying just 100 km from the African coast, the island boasts giant dunes located at the Parque Natural de Corralejo. Holidays in Fuerteventura can be enjoyed whenever you please, thanks to its balmy year-round climate and 150 exotic beaches, making it a popular destination for winter sun holidays as well as family summer holidays. With great resorts and restaurants geared up for all type of travellers, you can enjoy the home-away-from-home feel of the island, but still revel in all that gorgeous Spanish sunshine.
Due to its pleasant year-round weather, Fuerteventura has been a firm favourite when it comes to sunshine beach holidays. The summers – starting from June to August – are warm, dry and windy meaning you have clear sky, long hours of sunshine and warm beaches to relax on, making it the best time to plan your Fuerteventura holidays. Whereas the winters are mild with short-lived rain showers between December and March. However, the best time for swimming are from July to November.
Beachlife is big in Fuerteventura. So you will be spoilt for choice with the watersports and activities on offer on this fantastic holiday island. Choose from more than 150 beaches. Head to Playa del Mal Nombre for a fun day out with the family or to La Lajita Beach for a romantic, secluded sun soak. There are watersports available on most of the island’s beaches, and the marine life is stunning, making snorkelling plenty of fun.
There are plenty of companies all over Fuerteventura that offer excursions through the stunning countryside. All you have to do is decide whether you’d rather explore by horse or camel! A horseback ride or camel safari will create incredible memories you won't forget in a hurry. Both adults and children are welcome.
If you can tear yourself away from the sun-drenched beaches, then head further inland to explore some of the traditional Canarian villages. A visit to the old capital of Fuerteventura, Betancuria, is an ideal way to get a burst of history and culture in one. The traditional town has been incredibly well preserved and remains immaculate.
Fuerteventura produces its own unique cheese called Majorero. It is made from the milk of the goats that famously roam the island and you may find yourself wanting to take it all home with you. The goats themselves can also be found in many traditional Canarian dishes, such as goat stew. Fuerteventura's fresh seafood is not to be missed either.
The volcanic island of Fuerteventura is one of the few places where you can see hot rocks, geysers, craters and vast lava fields. With such a unique landscape, it’s no wonder there are a host of excursions and tours by foot, bike, camel or quad bike enabling visitors to experience the stunning natural surroundings. El Golfo - known as the Green Lagoon - will amaze you with its striking green tint, a phenomenon caused by oxidation in the rocks.
Pick up your parrot and hop aboard The Pedra Sartaña, a Spanish schooner that’s ready to sail the seven seas. Equipped with pirateworthy woodwork, barrels and high masts towering above, the schooner will make for a spectacular day out where the kids can take part in a host of fun activities including treasure hunts, games and learning to hoist the sails. Parents can choose to chill on deck or walk the plank and go for a dip in the warm waters!
Oasis Park faithfully recreates natural habitats for a range of reptiles, birds and mammals. The park houses over 3,000 animals and includes the animal park, an African savannah, botanical gardens and reptile centre. Visitors can see giraffes, hippos, sea lions and more. If you fancy a closer look, head up to the viewing platform where you can see the giraffes at eye level and don’t forget to check out the park’s reptile, sea lion, parrot and bird of prey shows.
If you’re fed up of exploring Fuerteventura by foot, go one step further and hire out a bike to experience some of the best parts of the island. Put your fitness levels to the test and peddle out to calming rivers, coast along craters and make your way up mountains where you’ll discover more of the island’s magical sights.
